Description
The letter from Sarafine’s parents is the same as always: tell them where she is so that they can set her up with a “promising suitor”. That’s the very reason she ran away from home and joined the rebels. That was before she went into hiding. Her intermediary is loyal and would never reveal her location; she pays him enough to keep him quiet.
Like the next one she flips over.
The wax seal is an ornate D entwined with a lion rampant—King Darion. She takes a slow breath. Just because he’s sending her a letter doesn’t mean he knows where she is. She decided eight years ago that she could never see him again. Is the slicing feeling in her chest from his betrayal, or her broken heart?
She flicks the letter into the fire.
“Aren’t we going to save Amelia?” Her pixie is covered in paint, barely looking up from her artwork to ask the question that steals Sarafine’s breath.
“Why would Amelia need saving?”
“Darion’s coming.”
